NZINGA'S DAUGHTERS - Music From the African Diaspora
This troupe celebrates good family values and promotes cultural diversity by integrating their experiences as Americans of African descent. Part of their theme centers on the Underground Railroad and, through poetry, stories and song and percussion instruments, they reveal coded messages used by African Americans on the trail to freedom. Nzinga's Daughters have been presenters at H.O.T. Schools programs for the Connecticut Commission on the Arts. They have performed at many churches, schools, museums, libraries and universities in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
BUGS, SLUGS & BEAVER CHEWS - WILD THING TUNES, WILD THING CLUES
Tom Seiling, singer and songwriter from Newfield, NY, will perform a very participatory family program consists of humorous songs about our natural world. Tom accompanies himself on guitar, banjo, harmonica and a drum machine. All songs include parts for the entire family.
FLASH! BAM! ALAKAZAM!
Lalia Madriguera will present an interactive, participatory children's program in which everyone sings along and dances along to rhymes from swing to samba, merenge and the conga. Lalia is the daughter of Enric Madriguera, a violinist and big band leader during the 30's and 40's, and Patricia Gilmore, who starred in her own NBC radio program before marrying Enric and joining his orchestra.
EARLY EVENING OF JAZZ FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES
Airborne Jazz will present an educational program using jazz music to teach jazz appreciation to younger audiences. This program introduces children to instruments and teaches them to use their imaginations. Airborne Jazz's concert videos have appeared on BET, Public Broadcasting, and TV Cable Networks across the country. Since 1992 this jazz band has been on the New England Foundation for the Arts' Prestigious Performing Arts Touring Roster with Arts in Education programs and performances.
EXPLORING ANCIENT EGYPT
Egyptologist, Paulette Morin will present a PowerPoint presentation and display ancient Egyptian replicas and jewelry allowing children and families to have fun with pyramids and pharaohs. Paulette is an active member of the American Research Center in Egypt, the American Institute of Archaeology, and the Friends of Egyptian Art at Brown University. Presented by Connecticut Opera, Seymour Barab's clever adaptation of the traditional Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale has deligthed audiences throughout New England.
